The Western Wall (also known as The Kotel) is a retaining wall of the Jewish Second Temple and its only remnant. After the legions of Titus had destroyed the Temple in the year 70 AD, the Western Wall remained and today it forms the part of the larger religious site in Jerusalem for three of the world?s largest religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Throughout the centuries, the Wall has been a site for spiritual and emotional reflection, visited by many. Each day, thousands of people can be found here, arriving from all over the world. It has been a custom to write one?s own message on a piece of paper ? a wish, prayer or hope, and place it as a note into the cracks of the Wall.
For the past decades, different kinds of special events have taken place on the plaza built beneath the Wall. The Western Wall Plaza is a venue of such occasions as ?coming-of-age? (B?nai Mitzvah) or military swearing-in ceremonies.

Today, the Western Wall and its Plaza are venues visited by people of most versatile backgrounds: tourists and the deeply religious, diplomats and soldiers, teachers and students - establishing the site as one of the symbols of our time.

As our goal is to bring you closer to the Western Wall in a respectful and trustful way, we pay special attention to every message sent. In this regard, we document each weekly placement of the messages with a short video and present it here for your convenience.

Question Why do people place their notes into the Western Wall?
Answer The Western Wall (also known as the Kotel) is a remnant of the Grand Temple. For centuries, the Jewish have gathered at the site, mourning the destruction of the Temple and praying to the God, establishing the Wall as a symbol of closeness with the divine. It is believed that prayers made at this holy place have a special weight. However, throughout the time, the symbolism of the Wall has evolved to the point that in modern days it is an everyday custom to visit the site and place a message into the Wall that contains a wish, hope or prayer for loved ones, humanity or oneself. Today, thousands of people of all religions and ethnicities come to the site from all over the world and address their message to the heavens. Also, it is a common practice for officials (foreign presidents, even the Pope) to visit the Wall and place their messages during their visit to Jerusalem.

Question Doesn?t the Wall get filled up with notes?
Answer Being a (mostly) religious site, the Western Wall is being continuously maintained by the religious authorities and the City of Jerusalem. On regular occasions, usually around the Rosh Hashanah and Pesah, the members of the Centre for holy places will remove the notes.

Question What happens with the notes afterwards?
Answer All the notes removed from the Western Wall are being brought to the Olive Mountain and buried at specially designated locations, together with other sacred objects.

Question Why SMS2Wall?
Answer It has come to our attention that there is a great need for people to stay close to the Western Wall (and other locations of spiritual, emotional or religious significance), even when they are physically not able to be there, due to the distance in time or place. SMS2Wall closes this distance, and allows people to communicate their intimate messages directly to the Western Wall at anytime, from any location, in a simple and practical manner, with the full respect for their privacy.

Question How can I be sure my message reaches the Wall?
Answer It is our imperative to deal with your most intimate messages with care and respect. Once your message is sent, you will receive a conformation text message (SMS) from us. Also, each time we bring the messages to the Wall, a video showing the placement will be published on the website.

Question How soon do you place the notes into the Wall?
Answer Normally speaking, the placement of the messages takes place every Friday, a day before the Shabbat. However, before any significant occasion, such as a major holiday (e.g. Sukkot, Pesah) or special event (Independence Day, Jerusalem Day, etc.) we will place the notes in advance of this date.

Question Who will read my message?
Answer No one. All messages are automatically processed by our system and not viewed by anyone. We also utilise a special process for printing your message and folding it into a note, in such a way that the content of the message is not seen by our team members. After printing, our team members will deliver the messages to the Western Wall and discreetly place them, without reading them or having access to your personal information.

Question Is my phone number open to public?
Answer Absolutely not! SMS2Wall simply receives the messages, prints them out and places them into the Western Wall with the full respect for your privacy. Both your message and your phone number are treated confidential (even for the members of our team) and are not being revealed nor used in any external communication.

Question Are there any limitations to the length of my message?
Answer No. You can send any message you want, regardless of its length. However, due to the (technical) fact that one text message (SMS) physically contains a maximum of 160 characters (including the spaces), all messages longer than 160 characters will be divided into the appropriate number of individual text message (SMS), and sent as such. Example: message containing 200 characters will be divided and sent as two separate text message (SMS) containing 160 and 40 characters, respectively.?

Question What are the costs?
Answer For each outgoing text message (SMS) you will be charged 0.99 USD by your mobile carrier company. This symbolic fee is used to cover the costs of the mobile providers? services (70%), as well as maintenance and logistic costs of SMS2Wall.

Pesah - 2.4.2007 - 9.4.2007
Pesah, also referred to as Passover, celebrates the Exodus and freedom of Israelites from their enslavement in Egypt. As one of the three pilgrimage festivals, Pesah marks the journey to the Temple of Jerusalem and the birth of the Jewish nation. Characteristic is that during the week of the festivities unleavened bread is eaten, reflecting on the fact that the Israelites left Egypt so promptly, that even their bread did not have enough time to raise.

Israel Independence Day - 24.4.2007
Israel Independence Day, or Yom Ha?atzma?ut, celebrates the declaration of the state of Israel in 1948. The official ceremony is held on Mount Herzl, including speeches from Israeli officials, a dramatic presentation, soldiers marching in various formations and the lighting of the twelve beacons by twelve appointed citizens, usually selected due to their significant contributions to the society and the state.

Jerusalem Day - 16.5.2007
Jerusalem Day, or Yom Yerushalayim, commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem under the Jewish state, during the Six-Day War in 1967. The significance of this day is that the Old City of Jerusalem, with the Temple Mount (and Western Wall), has been returned to Jewish, after almost 1900 years from the destruction of the Second Temple.

Shavuot - 23.5.2007
Shavuot (The Feast of Weeks), one of the three pilgrim festivals, concludes the Counting of the Omer and marks the day that the Ten Commandments were given at Mount Sinai. Traditionally, various dairy meals are eaten during this day.

Ninth of Av - 24.7.2007
Tisha B?Av, known as the ?saddest day in Jewish history?, is a day of fasting, commemorating the destruction of both the First Temple (in the year 587 BC) and the Second Temple (in the year 70 AD). Other misfortunate events in Jewish history, such as the expulsion of Jews from England (in the year 1290 AD) and Spain (in the year 1492 AD), as well as the Holocaust, are also associated with and remembered on this day.

Sukkot - 26.9.2007 - 1.10.2007
Sukkot, also known as the Feast of Booths, is one of the three pilgrimage festivals, marking the biblical journey of the Jewish to the Temple of Jerusalem. During the week of the festival, the people are instructed to eat their meals (and even sleep) in a special structure named sukkah, resembling the specific type of huts used by the Israelites during the 40-year period they spent in the desert, after their Exodus from Egypt.
